Hi Kate - good luck with your search for the elusive place. I know what you mean! Without seeking to sound too woo woo myself, i suppose it's about personal acceptance of oneself. Then maybe the environment simply falls into place. Easier typed than done though :-)

I'm a social person for the most part so I can enjoy and adapt to wherever. There is something romantic (not sure that's the word I'm looking for) about living in a quiet, small town but all in all, I think I'd go crazy with the lack of privacy and lack of busy chaos I like from time to time. Where everything seems to be within easy reach. However, I'm an inbetween girl. The 'burbs is where I grew up and find I'm most comfy as there's a bit of both worlds. The drawback is everyone seems to be the same. Oh well. I just need to be wealthy so I can have homes in different places to fit my mood. :)

Happy New Year! Glad you had a great winter holiday in Adelaide. So jealous of the heat you must have experienced.I completely know what you mean about moving away from your home town or city and feeling rootless. I grew up and lived in London intermittently for a total of about 25 years, then decided to leave for the lure and peace and quiet of the countryside - Scottish and otherwise. Since then I have moved around a lot and lived in some beautiful places but none of them, fabulous as they were, have that familiarity of home. I have great feelings of nostalgia towards London but can't quite bring myself to move back there again. Right now I am moving from Scotland to the South of England in search of that ever elusive place where I finally feel spiritually at one (if that doesn't sound too woo woo) with my environment.

Thanks graceunderpressure :-) I hope you're happy in hour house. 10 years is a long time to get settled in. 1 bus an hour sounds VERY hard to get used to. Is it the same bus driver? Does s/he get to know everyone's quirks?

Antony! You _do_ look great :) Wondered if you'd fallen off the grid, so nice to see you back. I moved a LOT, so living in this house for almost 10 yrs (in Apr) is a LONG term residence. It may be the longest I've lived anywhere in my life (49). It was very hard to leave Oxford and come to a little town (with one direction bus service (a loop) once an HOUR (this has now improved). :D 1 bus per HOUR?? REALLY. lol

Happy New Year Antony! I grew up in a small town and now live in a city. I prefer being more anonymous, having a little more privacy, and the city provides that. But at times I miss being neighbors with my relatives and having people stop by just in time for dinner and the little family gatherings that happen spontaneously. Still, love going home to visit, but city wins for me :)
